Arrowroot powder

Arrowroot powder is one of the best alternatives to cornstarch. It is a light and the very fine white powder that feels exactly the same as cornstarch. Arrowroot powder is widely used as a thickening agent for different dishes.

Differentiating between corn starch and arrowroot powder is not that easy. Both powders look exactly the same and have the same texture also. Even arrowroot gives the same result as that of cornstarch. That’s why arrowroot can be a good alternative.

You just have to mix it with apple, sugar, and other ingredients as you do with cornstarch. Arrowroot powder will give you a nice creamy texture with a thick consistency. It doesn’t contain any flavor or fragrance, hence is perfect for making apple pie filling without cornstarch.

All-purpose flour

All-purpose flour is also a good thickening agent. I have made white sauce for my pasta many times. And I always use all-purpose flour with butter. It gives a nice smooth thick texture without changing the flavor or smell. The best thing about all-purpose flour is that it is available very easily.

You can also use 00 flour if that’s available. 00 flour or any fine flour can be used in apple pie filling. Add flour to the pilled and cut apple pieces or add them to the pan. I recommend following the same process you used to do with cornstarch for apple pie filling.

Wheat Flour

Normal wheat flour is a bit darker in color and generally not used in thickening. It can make your apple pie filling look dark. But normal wheat flour works wonder and it doesn’t change the flavor also. Just add a bit of normal wheat flour to the apples or add it to the pan.
Texture and color of the filling may change due to the color and texture of the flour. I recommend using fine flour to get a smooth texture and perfect consistency.

Potato Starch

Potato starch is available in the powdered form. And is much similar to cornstarch or arrowroot powder. You can use potato starch to make apple pie filling without cornstarch. It doesn’t make the filling too thick but gives cheesy thick consistency.

I love using potato starch in soup and sauce it enhances the flavor and gives your smooth texture. Apple and potato starch is an amazing combination. I recommend mixing it with a little water before adding it to the pan.

Gram Flour

This flour is easily available and is very easy to use too. Gram is roasted and ground into a fine powder. This flour is used in many curries and you can make sauce also. It has an amazing aroma and I like it. Do not forget to taste it before the final try.

Gram flour will give a nice yellow color to your apple filling. It might get sticky when cooked. I usually roast the flour in an empty pan. Roasting will remove the raw taste and will reduce the stickiness. Do not over roast or burn it you have to roast the flour in low to medium flame.

Rice Flour

Rice flour has a coarse texture it is not as fine as all-purpose flour but it thickens the filling very well. You need to use less quantity of rice flour as compared to a fine flour. Rice flour soak water very quickly and turn thick. If you will use lots of rice flour apple pie filling will get stiff.

Rice water is recommended to use with hot or warm water. I generally, mix it with the apple pieces and add warm water when needed.

Tapioca

The root of the cassava plant is used to make tapioca. The starch of the plant is extracted from the storage root of the plant. It is widely spread in South America and is very easily available there. Cassa is native to north and central-west for Brazil.

The color is white and has a very fine texture similar to cornstarch. I found no difference using tapioca and cornstarch. If it is available, you can use it in making apple pie filling without cornstarch.
